Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

O'FALLON, MO - The Traverse City Beach Bums were able to capture a win over the River City Rascals by the score of 11-6 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark on Sunday night to finish off their six-game road swing on a winning note.

River City grabbed the early lead for the first time in the series. The Rascals were able to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning to open a 3-0 lead behind an RBI double by Bobby Mosby and two sacrifice flies.

The lead was short lived as the Beach Bums plated three runs in the top of the second inning to chase River City starter Chad Catalano from the game. Lance Koenig and Zack Kalter connected on back-to-back singles and Sam Orr drew a two-out walk. Jeff Brown came through with a base hit to get the Beach Bums on the board. An error allowed another run to score and kept the bases loaded. Justin Holmes drove in his fist run of the game with a walk to knot the contest at 3-3.

River City answered back with an unearned run in the bottom of the third to take a momentary 4-3 lead, but the Beach Bums would force the Rascals further into the bullpen (River City used seven pitchers on Saturday) with three fourth inning runs to take a 6-4 edge.

Back-to-back walks to Matt Rademacher and Sam Orr started the rally. Jeff Brown dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up and JT Thomas was able to tie the game with an RBI ground out. Justin Holmes gave the Beach Bums the lead with his third homer of the season, clearing the fence in center field to give Traverse City the 6-4 advantage.

Traverse City made it a 7-4 lead with an insurance run in the eighth. JT Thomas doubled to right but was thrown out at the plate on a single by Justin Holmes but Holmes would score from first on a double off the bat of Curtis Ledbetter with two away to extend the edge. A solo homer in the bottom of the inning brought River City again within two, but the Beach Bums blew the game open with four runs in the top of the ninth and held off a late River City rally to claim the win.

In the eighth inning, the Beach Bums used doubles from Lance Koenig and Sam Orr along with five walks including four straight to open the 11-5 lead. The Beach Bums drew 11 walks in the game. Ryan Czyz hit a homer in the bottom of the ninth but Nick Pepper finished off the win as the Beach Bums (13-19) salvaged one game in the series.

Ryan Gehring earned his second win on the mound. Gehring worked 6.2 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits. Jack Nelson threw two innings and Nick Pepper recorded the last out. Justin Holmes was chosen as the Beach Bums Player of the Game both offensively and defensively. He finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three walks, two runs, and three RBI. Curtis Ledbetter and Lance Koenig also finished with two hits as the Beach Bums totaled 12 in the contest.

The Beach Bums will have an off day on Monday before returning for the opener of a four-game series with the Central Division leading Windy City Thunderbolts at Wuerfel Park on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Beach Bums visor. The Beach Bums have yet to announce their starter for Tuesday while Windy City will send RHP Shawn Phillips (2-1, 4.01).
