Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums rallied from an early deficit to take the lead in the middle innings, but were unable to hold on as the Lake Erie Crushers took the series opener by a 5-3 final.
Lake Erie got out in front in the top of the first inning as Jodam Rivera scored on a wild pitch to put the Crushers up 1-0.
Despite numerous chances for both sides, neither team cracked the scoreboard again until the fifth when the Beach Bums surged in front. With Matt Brown on first, Kyle Eveland dropped a sinking liner past the diving reach of Arden McWilliams in right. Brown came around to score and tie the game. McWilliams throw to second short-hopped the Rivera covering the bag and caromed into leftfield. Eveland raced all the way around the bases as the ball continued to roll away from Lake Erie defenders, putting TC up 2-1.
The lead was shortlived, however, as a pair of Beach Bums errors put the Crushers back up 3-2 in the top of the sixth. Lake Erie tacked on single runs in the seventh and ninth to seemingly put the game away. Traverse City rallied, getting a ninth inning homer from J. T. Hall to pull to within 5-3. C. J. Ziegler would follow with a double to bring the tying run to the plate, but J. J. Pacella retired the next two batters to preserve the win.
Travis Risser (3-2) picked up the victory for the Crushers with Pacella notching his second save. Enrique Lechuga struck out seven in 6.1 innings, allowing only two earned runs, but suffered the tough luck loss.
Offensively, the Beach Bums knocked out 10 hits in the game including two each from Brown, Eveland, Hall and Ziegler. The pair of hits by Hall extended his hitting streak to six games. J. T. is batting an robust .478 (11-for-23) during the streak.
The Beach Bums continue the series against the Crushers as Ryan Platt (3-1, 2.23) starting for the Beach Bums against Josh Roberts (3-0, 1.85) for the Crushers. It is Sunny Country night at Wuerfel Park where the first 500 fans in the ballpark will receive a Sunny Country arm radio. It is also a Thirsty Throwback Thursday where fans can receive a dollar off 22 oz PEPSI products and a dollar off beer.
