MARION, IL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by the Illinois Corn Farmers, dropped the series opener to Southern Illinois Miners at Rent One Park 18-3 in Marion, Il Wednesday night. The CornBelters were knotted up with the first place Miners 3-3 heading into the seventh before surrendering 15 runs over the next two frames.
Normal CornBelters' starter Dan Blewett pitched six innings and only allowed five hits and three earned runs to cross the plate while striking out six before giving way to the CornBelters' bullpen in the seventh. Jason Furrow suffered the loss on the night only lasting 1/3 of an inning in the seventh, giving up only two hits, but walked four Miners and allowed six runs before he was pulled. Newly signed Andrew Layfield and Kyffin Marcum worked the final inning and 2/3.
The CornBelters only offense came in the opening frame with consecutive RBIs from Daniel Cox, Steve Alexander and Mike Garcia. Third basemen Cox and right fielder Garcia both went 2-4 on the night, as did second basemen Eric Brown who went 2-4 with a double. The two teams meet for the second of three games Thursday at Rent One Park in Marion with first pitch at 7:05 pm.
