Beach Bums Add DJ Johnson
TRAVERSE CITY, MI- The Traverse City Beach Bums took a huge step in making their bullpen the strength of their club when the team announced the signing of right-hander DJ Johnson on Tuesday.
Johnson was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Rays after finishing his collegiate career at Western Oregon University. The 6'4", 245 pound right-hander was assigned to the Tampa Bay Gulf Coast Rookie affiliate, the GCL Rays and appeared in 14 games for the club. In a relief role, Johnson compiled an impressive 2.05 ERA in 22 innings on the hill while striking out 16 batters. Johnson, 21, will likely play a late inning role alongside fellow right-handers Scott Dunn and Scott Mueller at the back end of the Beach Bums Bullpen.
"Johnson is a big right-hander with a power arm and excellent command of the strike zone," said Jason Wuerfel, Director of Baseball Operations. "I'm surprised he is available, but I'm excited to have him on the squad. I expect him to be a very valuable part of our bullpen."
The Traverse City Beach Bums 6th Annual FANFest will be held Saturday, April 30th this year with gates opening at 10:00 am.
