Miners Add 8 New Arms to Pitching Staff

MARION, Ill. - With spring training less than a week away, the Southern Illinois Miners have added some new faces to the pitching staff.
Right-handed pitcher Jimmy Marshall comes to the Miners following two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. He was drafted in the 23rd round in 2009 out of Florida State University. Last season he appeared in 12 games, all in relief, and posted a 1.93 ERA. He recorded 12 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched and allowed only 10 hits. At FSU he was a team captain and made 108 relief appearances with a career 3.41 ERA, striking out 142 batters in 136 innings.
Clayton Dill comes to the Miners following his year career with the Washington Nationals organization, who drafted him in the 35th round in 2008. In 2010 the 6-foot, 4-inch, 225 pound lefty pitched in 40 games for High A Potomac in the Carolina League. There he had a 4.41 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 52 innings. In his professional career he has struck out 110 batters over 95 innings of work and allowed just 91 hits.
Southpaw Ryan Quigley (no relation to the former Miners pitcher of the same name) comes to the Miners following a two year career with the Oakland Athletics organization. In 2010 he split his time between short season Vancouver and Low A Kane County where he struck out 17 in 17 innings in the bullpen.
Righty Justin Harper joins the Miners with two years of experience in the Astros organization. He was their 17th round pick in 2009. The hard throwing righty struck out 16 in 18 innings in 2010 with the Greeneville Astros of the Appalachian League.
Fellow righty Justin Robichaux pitched briefly in 2010 with Pensacola of the American Association where he worked with new Miners Pitching Coach Justin Lord. Robichaux pitched in two games and allowed one run. He played his college baseball at Louisiana-Lafayette where he had a 3.32 ERA pitching in 56 games.
A former Washington Nationals draft pick, left-handed pitcher Kai Tuomi is entering his fourth professional season. Tuomi was a Northern League all-star as a starting pitcher with the Gary South Shore RailCats in 2008. Midway through the 2008 season he was traded to Evansville where he was a teammate of current Miners Mike Damchuk and Justin Randall. In 2009 Tuomi made the transition to the bullpen with the Otters as he made 11 starts and 18 relief appearances.
The Miners have also acquired a pair of pitchers via trades for players to be named later. Brendon Malkowski was picked up from Quebec in the American Association. With Quebec he appeared in 11 games and posted a 4.28 ERA. The 6-foot, 6-inch, 230 pound righty finished his college baseball in 2010 at Georgia College and State University where he was 6-1 with a 3.58 ERA.
The other trade brought starting pitcher Sean Teague to the staff. A 25th round Marlins draft pick in 2009, he joined Wichita of the American Association in 2010 and put together a 3.58 ERA in 13 starts. In 2009 with the Marlins Gulf Coast League affiliate, he appeared in 14 games with a 2.63 ERA.
"With the retirement and aging out of a few of our pitchers from last year," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "It was important that we bring in some guys who have experience to fill those valuable roles. The reports on all of these guys are very good and come on great recommendations. We are adding them to a strong returning core, and our coaches are excited to get them all to camp to see how this staff shapes up."
The Miners will open the 2011 season on Friday, May 20 on the road against the Gateway Grizzlies. The home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, May 24, at 7:05 p.m. against the Evansville Otters.
