Baysox Win in Walk-Off Fashion

Bowie, Md. - With the score tied and the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Brandon Waring singled to secure the walk-off win for the Baysox (25-26) 7-6 over the Reading Fightin Phils (20-31) Thursday night.

"With the bases loaded and one out, I was looking to get the job done early," Waring said. "I was sitting 1-0 and he threw me a fastball a little bit up that I fouled off. I took a step out to get focused and he threw another pitch lower in the zone and I was able to get the head of the bat on it."

After the Baysox bullpen surrendered a run in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game, the offense rallied once again to seal the victory. The Baysox offense was much-improved with runners in scoring position, batting 5-for-11 and leaving eight runners on base while recording 13 hits.

"I really liked the bottom of the ninth inning," said Manager Gary Kendall. "We haven't done that all year. We get a lead off double and get a bunt down then you have Brandon Waring who is starting to come into himself again hit a hard ball into the alley. I'm really happy for the team."

Tossing the knuckleball, Baysox starter Eddie Gamboa pitched seven innings and allowed four runs on 11 hits while striking out five and not issuing a walk in the no decision

Reading jumped out to the lead in the top of the second inning against Gamboa. Miguel Abreu hit a lead off single to center field and moved to second base on a Tommy Mendonca single to right field. With two outs, Derrick Mitchell singled to right field to plate Abreu and give Reading a 1-0 lead.

The Baysox used a big five-hit third inning to take the lead against Reading starter Seth Rosin. Center fielder Garabez Rosa hit a lead off double to center field and scored on a double to left field by third baseman Ty Kelly. Shortstop Niuman Romero brought Kelly home with a single to center field and Waring hit a two out double to left field to plate Romero. Right fielder Henry Urrutia brought the final run of the inning home with a single to center field to give Bowie a 4-1 lead.

The Fightin Phils tied the game 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning. Edgar Duran hit a lead off single to right field and moved to second base when Tyler Henson singled to center field. Jim Murphy then doubled to plate Duran and moved Henson to third base where he scored on an Abreu groundout. Mendonca hit a ground rule double that bounced over the center field fence to bring in the third run of the inning.

Bowie came right back to retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Urrutia hit a lead off single to center field and scored on a double to center field by catcher Luis Martinez. Left fielder Steven Bumbry moved Martinez to third base with a sacrifice bunt and he scored on a two out single to left field by second baseman Josh Horton to make the score 6-4.

Jim Murphy hit a home run to center field to lead off the top of the eighth inning facing reliever Tim Bascom to make the score 6-5.

Reading came back to tie the game 6-6 in the top of the ninth inning against Baysox reliever Zech Zinicola. Derrick Mitchell hit a one out double to left field and scored on a Zach Collier double to right field to tie the game.

The Baysox offense showed one more burst of life in the bottom of the ninth inning to get the win against Reading reliever Jay Johnson. Horton hit a lead off double to left field and Kelly was then hit by a pitch. Designated hitter Caleb Joseph was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out and Waring was the hero with the game-winning single into the gap to give the Baysox the 7-6 win.

Zinicola got the Bowie for Bowie, pitching one inning and allowing one run on two hits and a walk.

Johnson picked up the loss for Reading, pitching one inning and allowing one run on one hit while walking one batter.

RHP Mike Wright (6-0, 3.61) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team begins a three game road series with the New Britain Rock Cats.

The Baysox depart for a seven day, six game road trip with stops in New Britain and Harrisburg Friday before returning home for a three game series Friday, June 7.
