New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - With two left-handers going head-to-head in front of a sellout crowd Thursday morning at New Britain Stadium, the Rock Cats' Pat Dean was outstanding in besting Richmond's Jack Snodgrass, 2-1. With both pitchers performing at the top of their games, Dean - the 24-year-old Naugatuck native - allowed just five hits, no walks and 1 run over 7 complete innings of work. He gave way to Blake Martin for the 8th inning - and A.J. Achter for the 9th - who combined to slam the door on the visitors. Achter picked up his 2nd Save of 2013.

Snodgrass, who entered the game 4-0 for the Flying Squirrels, was also terrific, working into the 8th inning and allowing just 2 earned runs on six hits with 1 strike out. His Richmond club had won five-in-a-row coming into today's action.

Richmond took an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd-inning when the League's leading hitter, Mark Minicozzi, opened the frame with a single to center. Ricky Oropesa followed with a single, and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Ehire Adrianza's 1-out sac fly to center scored Minicozzi with the game's first run.

The Rock Cats tied it in the bottom of the 2nd on a Chris Pettit walk, a passed ball which advanced him to second, and a Daniel Ortiz single to right that scored him.

New Britain went ahead for good in the 4th frame when Curt Smith led with a double to the left field corner and later scored on a 2-out single by Daniel Ortiz; the RBI was Ortiz' second of the game and 30th on the season.

With 6,457 looking on, the Flying Squirrels put two men on in the 9th before Achter got Adrianza to fly to center to end the threat - and the game.

With the victory, New Britain Pitcher Pat Dean's record improves to 3-5, while the Rock Cats' overall mark goes to 25-29.
