(Bowie, MD) - With 1,000 incoming freshmen from the Naval Academy in attendance, the Reading Fightin Phils opened their only visit to Prince George's Stadium with a 6-1 loss to the Bowie Baysox on Friday night. Tyler Viza was strong over six-plus innings, but the Fightins shortcomings with runners in scoring position hurt them early against the new look Baysox.
The Fightins had an early opening in the first against Dean Kremer after a 31-minute rain delay at the outset. Adam Haseley opened the ballgame with a single, and got to third on Darick Hall's two-out double. But as he'd show throughout the night, Kremer would escape trouble when pitching out of the stretch.
Viza pitched well and battled all night, but let up his first run in the second when Rylan Bannon singled home Yusniel Diaz after a leadoff single. The Baysox went up 2-0 in the fourth after Aderlin Rodriguez reached on an error to start the inning and Anderson Feliz sliced a double into the left field corner.
Kremer made it through five scoreless innings, working around a leadoff baserunner in four of them before dumping it off to the bullpen. In the sixth, the Baysox got a leadoff single from Ryan Mountcastle, who scored two batters later on Diaz' second double. Viza came out for the seventh inning for the first time since his final start of 2017, getting chased on an RBI single from Mountcastle to make it 4-0. Aaron Brown came in and got an inning-ending double play, but got tagged for two runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Down to their last three outs and trailing 6-0, Drew Stankiewicz reached on a throwing error from Rodriguez at first to start the inning against Zach Pop. Haseley later came through with his second hit on a line double into left center, preventing the shutout and getting the Fightins on the board before the ballgame ended.
