Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BOWIE, Md. - Nick Markakis and Ryan Hubele homered but the Baysox fell to the Navigators, 9-3, at Prince George's Stadium.
The score was tied, 3-3, entering the seventh, but Norwich scored six unanswered runs in the last three innings to pull away.
Kevin Frandsen gave the Navigators an early lead with a solo home run off Kurt Birkins with one out in the first. But the Baysox answered back in the second, when Markakis hit a moon shot that just made it over the fence in left. It was his second home run in as many games with the Baysox.
Norwich scored twice in the top of the third to move ahead, 3-1. Hubele cut Bowie's deficit to one with a solo shot to left, his third of the season.
The Baysox evened the score in the sixth thanks to a pair of errors by Norwich catcher Chris Curry. Pond walked to lead off the inning and then stole second. Curry's throw sailed into centerfield, allowing Pond to move to third. Hubele grounded out with the infield in for the first out, and Mike Huggins followed by tapping a ball to short. Jamie Athas threw home, but Curry missed the catch and Pond slide home safely.
Curry redeemed himself in the top of the seventh. He laced a pitch from Birkins (6-8) over the wall in right for a home run to put Norwich ahead, 4-3.
Later in the inning, the Navigators had runners on the corners with two outs and Baysox manager Don Werner brought in Chris Piersoll out of the bullpen. While pitching to Randy Walter, third base umpire John Coons called Piersoll for a balk. That brought in one run and sent Werner out of the dugout. After arguing with Werner for a few seconds, Coons ejected him from the game. Werner stayed on the field to state his case for several minutes before heading to the clubhouse.
The ejection failed to galvanize the Baysox. The only batter to reach in the final three innings was Markakis, who walked in the seventh.
The Navigators, meanwhile, continued to pour it on. Curry struck again with a two-run shot in the eighth, and Walter came home on a wild pitch by Sendy Rleal in the ninth.
BAYSOX NOTES: In four games with the Baysox, Hubele is hitting .471 (8-for-17) with three homers and four RBI.... Curry's homer in the eighth was the first run charged to Piersoll in 19.2 innings pitched...The Baysox (54-55) once again missed out on a chance to move over .500 for the first time since July 9.
ON DECK: The Baysox and Navigators continue their four-game series with a 7:05 p.m. contest on Wednesday. Baysox RHP Cory Morris (5-4, 2.69) will be opposed by RHP Chris Begg (5-5, 3.27).
