New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH -Eric Duncan and Omir Santos hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning to help the Trenton Thunder snap a five-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Tuesday night at Fisher Cats Ballpark. New Hampshire lost for the 11th time in 12 games to fall 2.5 games behind Trenton in the race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern League's Northern Division.
Duncan and Santos hit their consecutive home runs off Fisher Cats starter Ismael Ramirez (6.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 0 BB, 9 K) to stake the Thunder to a 2-0 lead.
New Hampshire (52-56) rallied back to tie the game, 2-2, on Ryan Roberts' fifth-inning RBI double and Ron Davenport's lead-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning against Trenton starter Matt DeSalvo (6.1 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 10 K).
Trenton (55-54) would take the lead for good against reliever Bubbie Buzachero (0.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 0 K) in the top of the eighth inning. Gabe Lopez, just back from Triple-A Columbus earlier in the day, singled to centerfield. Following Bronson Sardinha's sacrifice bunt, former Red Sox outfielder Michael Coleman ripped a stand-up triple off the centerfield wall to give the Thunder a 3-2 lead. Eric Duncan's sacrifice fly scored Coleman to make it 4-2.
Trenton added another insurance run in the top of the ninth inning against Steve Andrade (1.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 K) when Lopez (2-for-5, RBI, R) drove in JT Stotts with a two-out single for a 5-2 lead.
The Fisher Cats made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning against Trenton closer Justin Pope (1 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 1 K). Davenport (3-for-4, 2 R, RBI) doubled down the leftfield line, Brad Hassey singled to left and Carlo Cota drove Davenport home with a bloop single, cutting the Thunder lead to 5-3. Miguel Negron ripped a ball to right-centerfield that was tracked down by Trenton centerfielder Matt Carson. Cota was doubled off first base, and Roberts struck out to end it.
Left-hander Charlie Manning (4-2) pitched 1.2 innings of relief for the win. Buzachero (4-3) took the loss, and Pope earned his 22nd save.
With seven wins in eleven meetings, the Thunder clinched the season series with the Fisher Cats. There are two games remaining in the series.
Toronto Blue Jays 2004 number-one draft pick David Purcey (0-1, 4.50) makes his Fisher Cats Ballpark debut when he opposes Trenton left-hander Danny Borrell (1-0, 7.90) Wednesday night at 6:35pm. Wednesday is UNH Football/New Hampshire Fisher Cats football giveaway day at the ballpark. For tickets or more information, visit www.nhfishercats.com.
