Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Done In Late...Again

Henry Mateo's go-ahead RBI single capped off a four-run eighth inning for the Harrisburg Senators, who came back from a three-run deficit and beat the Binghamton Mets 5-4 in the series opener at Commerce Bank Park last night. Brett Harper homered twice, with Bobby Malek and Mike Jacobs also picking up RBI for the B-Mets, who lost their eighth straight ballgame, extending a season high.

Home Run Derby

Last night, Harper became the third B-Met to have a multi-homer game this season, joining Mike Jacobs, who's done it three times, and Aarom Baldiris. Harper, who's hit three homers in his last two games, has hit nine longballs for the B-Mets this season and 29 between Binghamton and High-A St. Lucie in 2005. Only Rancho Cucamonga's Brandon Wood (34) has more homers in the minors than Harper. Asheville's Joseph Koshansky also has 29.

Close And Late

The B-Mets have lost 23 of their last 29 ballgames, in large part because of an inability to finish off opponents. Last night, Binghamton led 4-1 after seven innings. Fourteen times over their last 29 contests, the B-Mets have tied the game or had the lead in the seventh inning or later. Binghamton is just 6-8 in those games. Three of Binghamton's six 2005 losses when leading after seven and two of their three defeats this year when leading after eight have come during their current swoon.

‘Pen Not So Mighty

Last night, relievers Rafael Lopez and Jeremy Hill were responsible for Harrisburg's four-run eighth. In their last 13 games, B-Mets relievers have allowed 55 runs, 47 of them earned, spanning 51 2/3 innings (8.19 ERA). The Binghamton ‘pen hasn't turned in a scoreless outing since Garcia threw two shutout innings July 16th vs. Reading. B-Mets relievers have picked up just one save since June 22nd and haven't earned a win since June 30th at New Britain (Garcia). B-Mets starters own the team's last six wins, three of which were complete games.

On The Mound

RHP Orlando Roman (3-3, 4.53)

Last Time Out: Thu. @ ALT (ND): 5 IP, 4 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 11 K (L 6-5)...Orlando allowed a run in the second and three more in the third, working with baserunners in every inning. The righthander picked up two Ks in every inning but the first, establishing a new career high in strikeouts in his fourth career double-figure strikeout game. Orlando departed with a 4-3 deficit, the first time in five starts he's left without a lead, but the B-Mets' offense was able to get him off the hook before falling in the ninth.

This Season: After starting the season in the bullpen, Orlando's been in the B-Mets' starting rotation since May 13th, going 1-3 with a 4.41 ERA in 13 starts. The righthander's allowed three earned runs or fewer in nine of those starts and has gone at least five inning ten times. Walks have been a problem for Orlando, who's issued three free passes or more in seven of his starts. Seven times Orlando has left a start with the lead, including four straight starts July 1st-23rd, but only once has he picked up a win (5/29 vs. TRE).

Against Harrisburg: Orlando made one start against the Senators last season, picking up a win August 20th at NYSEG Stadium, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks, striking out six, in five innings in a 4-2 B-Mets win.

Background: The 26-year-old Vega Baja, Puerto Rico native got into 28 games between High-A St. Lucie and Binghamton last year, starting 21 of them. He was 2-2, 4.50 in five starts with Binghamton last season, striking out 27 and walking 13 in 26 innings. Orlando is in his seventh professional season after being drafted by the Mets in the 31st round in 1999 out of Indian Hills (IA) Community College.
