Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds offense never got going as they were shutout 2-0 by the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Wednesday night at TicketReturn.com Field.
The Shorebirds (16-31) pitching staff nearly held the Pelicans (34-13) at bay as well, as it was just one mistake in the game that decided the contest.
With one on and one out in the fourth inning, Felix Stevens blasted a two-run homer out to left, his fifth of the season, to produce the only runs of the game.
The Shorebirds had an opportunity late as they put two on with two out in the seventh, but Erinson Placencia struck out, extinguishing the threat. Placencia's at-bat was the only at-bat with a runner in scoring position in the game for Delmarva.
Tyler Schlaffer (1-3) went the first five shutout innings for the Pelicans, earning the win. Schlaffer allowed just two hits while striking out eight.
Daniel Federman (0-6) suffered the tough defeat for Delmarva, going five innings while allowing just the two runs on two hits and a walk, striking out four.
Jose Miguel Gonzalez earned his first save of the year for Myrtle Beach, going the final four frames while conceding just two hits and a walk, striking out seven.
Although he didn't factor into the decision, Carter Baumler pitched well again for the Shorebirds. In his second pro outing, he went three scoreless, allowing three hits and two walks, striking out four. Over his first six pro innings, he has yet to allow a run while striking out nine.
The Shorebirds continue their series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Thursday, June 2. Juan De Los Santos (1-5, 3.15) is slated to go for the Shorebirds while Myrtle Beach counters with Luke Little (1-1, 2.78). First pitch from TicketReturn.Com field is slated for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
