Augusta GreenJackets News Release

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: Game two between the Augusta GreenJackets (24-23) and Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (19-28) came down to the very end but the Cannon Ballers held back a late ninth-inning comeback to defeat the GreenJackets 7-6.

The scoring started tonight in the first inning for Kannapolis on a groundout by DJ Gladney that scored Wes Kath to make it 1-0 Cannon Ballers.

They'd strike again in the third inning on an RBI single by Colson Montgomery to double the lead to 2-0 for Kannapolis.

Augusta would fight back in the bottom half of the inning as they got on the board with an RBI single by Caleb Durbin cutting the lead to 2-1 for the Cannon Ballers. The GreenJackets would take the lead a few batters later as Geraldo Quintero punched one back up the middle to score Kadon Morton and Caleb Durbin to make it 3-2 GreenJackets.

That score would remain in hand through the sixth inning as Augusta starter Luis Vargas delivered a strong start for the GreenJackets going a career-high six innings while also striking out nine, another best in his young career.

The Cannon Ballers would come up with one last big swing against Vargas in the sixth inning as DJ Gladney took him deep to right-field to catapult Kannapolis back on top 4-3.

In the seventh, two more runs would come in for the visitors on an RBI single by James Beard and a sacrifice fly by Colson Montgomery upped the lead to 6-3.

In the final inning, they'd add one more key insurance run on a solo homer by the nine-hitter James Beard to cap off a three-hit game, making it 7-3 Cannon Ballers.

The GreenJackets made one final push in the bottom of the ninth as they load the bases with one out. After Kadon Morton bounced into a fielder's choice to get the force at home, Caleb Durbin worked a bases-loaded walk to bring up Cal Conley as the winning run. Conley struck one deep to left but missed a home run by just a few feet as he knocked a two-run double off the top of the wall to make it a one-run game. With the tying run at third, and winning at second for the GreenJackets, Geraldo Quintero grounded out to second base to end the game as Kannapolis was just able to hold on to win 7-6.

Both starters factored into the final decision as Tommy Sommer earned his first win for the Cannon Ballers with Luis Vargas taking the loss for Augusta.

The series continues on Thursday night as the six-game set is now even at one apiece with Landon Leach getting the call for the GreenJackets versus Brooks Gosswein for Kannapolis with first pitch at 7:05 pm.

The fifth homestand at SRP Park continues Thursday night against the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (Chicago White Sox) with Thirsty Thursday along with CSRA Idol Night at the ballpark where fans can sing along all night long with a Karaoke-Style theme. GreenJackets put on the red uniforms on Friday night for Braves Buzzfest with a special visit for Braves mascot Blooper who will make an appearance at SRP Park. The White-Claw Pregame Concert Series continues with music from MacKenzie Blake (4:30-5:30 pm) on Saturday, in addition to Cancer Survivor/Awareness night along with another Fireworks Extravaganza following the game presented by Augusta University Health. The homestand finishes on Sunday with Bark in the Park sponsored by Hollywood Feed along with Sunday Funday!
