Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, announced today that Moose defenceman Nolan Baumgartner will serve as a playing captain for the 2010 Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic, to be held January 18-19 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine.
Baumgartner, 33, has appeared in 24 games this season with the Moose where he has accumulated seven points (1g & 6) along with 18 penalty minutes. Last season, the assistant captain appeared in 72 games with the club. In that time, the Calgary, AB native collected 11 goals and 22 assists for 33 points and 50 penalty minutes. Baumgartner played in 22 games in Manitoba's 2009 Calder Cup run where he collected five assists and 22 penalty minutes. Baumgartner was team captain during the 2004-05 season and scored the first-ever goal at the MTS Centre back on Nov. 17/04. In 306 career games as a Moose, Baumgartner has scored 35 goals and 116 assists for 151 points and 312 penalty minutes. He was named the team's top defenceman in 2003 and 2005.
Overall, he has played in 739 career games in the American Hockey League since 1996 where he's collected 75 goals and 259 assists for 334 points and 744 penalty minutes with Iowa, the Philadelphia Phantoms, Manitoba, Norfolk, and Portland. He has appeared in two AHL All-Star Classics in his career - 2005 with Manitoba and as a starter in 2007 while with Philadelphia.
Baumgartner has also played in 131 career NHL games with Dallas, the Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Washington. In that time, he's scored six goals and 39 assists for 45 points and 67 penalty minutes. His most productive season was in 2005-06 when he played in 70 games with the Canucks and scored five goals and 29 assists for 34 points and 30 penalty minutes. Baumgartner was originally drafted in the first round, 10th overall, by the Washington Capitals in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.
Baumgartner becomes the third Moose player in franchise history to serve as a playing captain in the AHL All-Star Classic. Mike Keane received the honor in 2007 in Toronto, ON while Jimmy Roy was the first-ever Manitoba-named captain in 2006 when the AHL All-Star Classic was played at MTS Centre.
The 2010 Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic will feature the 2010 AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Monday, January 18 (8:00 p.m. ET) and the 2010 AHL All-Star Game on Tuesday, January 19 (6:00 p.m. ET), and will be televised live nationally in the United States and Canada.
