Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery (2-2-3, 9 points, 4th place) takes on its Eastern Conference rival the Atlanta Silverbacks (2-3-1, 7 points, 6th place) Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 PM. This is the third game Charleston has played against the Silverbacks in 2004. The Battery lost the first match 2-0 in Atlanta (05/08) and tied the second 2-2 in a game played at Blackbaud Stadium (05/15).
Atlanta failed to make the playoffs in 2003 but have strengthened their roster considerably during the off-season. Former Battery players Fred Degand and Andrew Lewis are both Silverbacks now as is the 2001MLS goal scoring champion, Honduran striker, Alex Pineda-Chacon.
The Silverbacks also hired a new Head Coach for the 2004 season, David Vaudreuil. Vaudreuil is a seven-year MLS veteran who won two MLS Cups (1996 & 1997) and an US Open Cup (1996) as a member of DC United. In addition to United Vaudreuil played for the Miami Fusion, the Colorado Rapids and the Columbus Crew.
In addition to Degand and Lewis the Atlanta roster includes several other ex-Battery players. Forwards, Mac Cozier, Ivo Ilarianov, Velko Iotov plus defender Alan Woods have all played for Charleston.
Atlanta enters the game on the back of a 1-0 OT road win over the Richmond Kickers. Former Battery forward Ivailo Ilarianov scored the decisive goal.
Charleston last match was a 0-0 tie with the Puerto Rico Islanders in a game played in Puerto Rico. The Battery was scheduled to play a two-match series with the Islanders but the second game was postponed due to heavy rain.
