Undefeated Timbers return home to host Milwaukee
May 28, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Western Conference-leading Portland Timbers are 4-0 for the first time in franchise history heading into Saturday's match against the Milwaukee Wave United. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at PGE Park.
TIMBERS VS. MILWAUKEE - SATURDAY
Milwaukee plays at Seattle Friday night, so it will be important not to fall behind for the Timbers, who have trailed for only five minutes this season. Milwaukee returns several key players from a team that scored seven goals on Portland in two games last season but has been held scoreless in its first two games heading into Friday's match at Seattle. Former Timber Greg Howes is in the mix for the Wave United, as well as defender Chad Dombrowski and newcomer Johnny Torres.
U.S. OPEN CUP
The U.S. Open Cup-bound Timbers still do not know whom they will face in the third round of the in-season tournament, which includes 40 teams from varying levels of American professional and amateur soccer, as pairings for the first two rounds were announced Tuesday. The Timbers will play a lower-division team on June 30, but the location of the match has yet to be determined.
TIMBERS VISIT SHRINERS
The Portland Timbers paid a visit to children staying at Shriners Hospital on Thursday in Southwest Portland. Shriners is a 40-bed pediatric orthopaedic hospital providing comprehensive care to children at no charge. Players including Byron Alvarez, Dan Antoniuk, Memo Arzate, Bayard Elfvin, Aaron Heinzen, Edwin Miranda, Jake Sagare, Jarrod Weis and Brian Winters signed autographs, met with Timbers fans and handed out special gifts from the team to children in the hospital.
SATURDAY PROMOTION
The first 1,000 fans in attendance at Saturday's match will receive a Timbers team poster.
HOWE ON THE MIC
Timbers head coach Bobby Howe was the special guest of Portland Beavers' radio announcer Rich Burk for two innings of Thursday night's Beavers game at PGE Park. Howe, who became interested in baseball during the 1995 Seattle Mariners playoff run, gave Burk a lesson on cockney rhyming slang on the broadcast.
INJURY UPDATE
Midfielder Memo Arzate will sit out Saturday's game with a sprained right knee.
ON THE AIR
Saturday's match will be aired live on KZNY AM-1010 at 7 p.m. with Andy McNamara calling the play-by-play. Arnulfo Alvarez will call the game in Spanish on KRMZ AM-1150. Both broadcasts can be heard on the Internet at 7 p.m. on OregonLive.com.
