Battery Loses to Charlotte

Charlotte, NC - The Charleston Battery lost to the Charlotte Eagles by a score of three goals to one Saturday night at Queens University Stadium. Substitute midfielder Maikel Chang's second half goal was the lone bright spot for the Battery in an otherwise muted performance.

Charlotte scored their first goal in just the second minute after a defensive miscue by goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper who played the ball directly to Charlotte's Juan Guzman inside the penalty-area. Guzman made no mistake and drilled home from close-range.

The Eagles doubled their lead in the 28th minute after Charleston defender Colin Falvey conceded a free-kick twenty yards out. Midfielder Jorge Herrera whipped the ball into the middle and it was flicked home by forward Juan Sakeyre.

The Battery made two substitutions at half time with Maikel Chang and Haviel Cordoves both entering the game. The change paid immediate dividends as Charleston pulled a goal back thirty seconds into the second half.

The ball was worked into midfielder Andre Lewis at the edge of the eighteen yard box. Lewis could have taken a shot but instead slipped a clever pass to Maikel Chang to tuck home past Charlotte goalkeeper Alec Kann.

The Battery fight-back was short-lived however as Charlotte quickly restored its two goal advantage. This time is was Sekyere providing the assist working a combination pass with Herrera in the 65th minute that undid the Battery defense allowing Herrera to score with a neat finish.

Substitute striker Adam Mena forced a good save from Kann in the closing moments but despite the late pressure Charlotte looked comfortable as they held firm and closed out the game to earn the victory.

The Charleston Battery returns home to Blackbaud Stadium next Friday night for a 7:30 PM USL PRO match versus the Richmond Kickers.
