Eagles Snap Losing Streak with Big Win at Home

June 21, 2014 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charlotte Eagles News Release

Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Eagles faced off against long time rivals Charleston Battery tonight and broke their six-game USLPRO losing streak with a 3-1 victory.

The game quickly started off in favor of the Eagles when Juan Guzman intercepted a pass that Charleston goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper had intended for one of his defensemen. The Colombian corralled the loose pass and put it in the back of the net to open the scoring.

The Eagles kept the momentum going as they struck again in the 28th minute as Charleston was penalized with a yellow card. The ensuing free kick from Jorge Herrera was flicked on goal by Fred Sekyere, it was the first year midfielder's first professional goal.

Shortly after Sekyere's goal it looked like the Battery almost made it on the board but the goal was disallowed after an offside call. Drew Yates almost widened the gap right before the half but again the goal was disallowed after another offside call.

Coming back from halftime Charleston hit quick and got their first tally on the board when Mikael Chang, who had just subbed into the game for the second half, took a good cross and slipped it past Eagles goalkeeper Alec Kann.

The Eagles restored their two-goal advantage in the 65th minute when Fred Sekyere played in Jorge Herrera. The Eagles veteran slotted his shot past Cooper who got tripped up on the play.

The Eagles maintained the energy and with good defense and big saves from Kann they were able to keep the gap at two to take the win 3-1, breaking their six-game losing streak. This was also Alec Kann's first professional victory. The Chicago Fire loanee has now played in three games for Charlotte this season.

Charlotte takes to the road to battle the Harrisburg City Islanders on Friday, June 27th before traveling to Rochester and taking on the Rhinos on Saturday, June 28th. The Lady Eagles return home to play next Saturday the 28th against the Carolina Elite Cobras.
