Battalion Propped up against Petes

March 16, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Peterborough Petes News Release

Following a touching ceremony to honor Petes billet families, the Maroon and White took the ice for the second last time at the PMC for the final tilt of the season with the North Bay Battalion. Even with the support provided with most of the billets in attendance, and a crowd of 3,182 on hand, the Petes dropped a 5-1 contest to Stan Butler's Battalion.

With several major losses including Zach Gallant and Matt Timms and the possibility of playoffs a distant memory after a series of tough defeats in February and March, the Petes were looking to entertain and finish off the season on a high note, while getting valuable minutes for the team's many young guns.

The first period started strong off the faceoff with a back and forth type of physicality that is to be expected from a late season game against North Bay, as Petes and Troops alike hit the walls within the first couple of moments. The first marker came at 12:54 with an early North Bay goal as Brad Chenier took the biscuit from Braden Henderson and slipped through a scrambling Dylan Wells to give the visitors the 1-0 lead.

With 3 minutes left to go in the opener the Troops extended their lead by a point with Jake Henderson contributing a tip while Adam McMaster and Kyle Potts put their names on the apples before the period ran out. The Battalion were not prepared to let the Petes off easy in the last 2 minutes as Matthew Struthers raised the tally to 3-0 with the help of Justin Brazeau and Luke Burghardt.

The first came to a close with the Petes trailing 3-0 with an 11-11 match on the shot clock

The second frame presented the first penalty of the night and allowed Peterborough to execute their penalty kill as Logan DeNoble went to the box on a tripping call, even with the advantage of an extra man over the home team the Troops lead remained at 3-0.

Some of the biggest excitement of the night came at 15:27 when a Chad Denault cross check led to a short lived brawl, with both Denault and North Bay's Simon Rose going to the box for the check and a hooking call for Rose. As both teams were equalized with a 4 on 4 matchup it did not stop North Bay from capitalizing, as Struthers netted his second of the night (this time unassisted) to increase to a 4-0 lead for the visitors.

With 4:25 left in the middle frame the Troops yet again bypassed Wells as Burghardt and Struthers combined for the Battalion's fifth unanswered goal of the night.

40 minutes ended with the visiting North Bay up 5-0 while your Petes held a single point in shots with 21-20 on the tracker.

The final frame remained physical, with the majority of the shots in the first several minutes audibly striking the walls behind the goaltenders. quite a few coming off Maroon and Black sticks as the home team furiously attempted to cut the shutout they had been experiencing in the past 40 minutes.

The third penalty to the Petes was awarded to Cole Fraser for interference which dropped the already outgunned Peterborough team down a man with 13 minutes left to go. Unfortunately this would do little to assist the Liftlock Lads in getting a mark on the board. North Bay received their own punishment moments before Fraser left the box which would pit them 4 against a full Petes line for 2 minutes but even that was fruitless.

With another Battalion slip up lowering their numbers yet again the Petes finally cut Chritian Propp's near shutout night with a powerplay goal and the 30th of the season for captain DeNoble from Nick Robertson and Adrien Beraldo to mark it 5-1.

The final battle against the Troops would come to a close with North Bay taking the victory by four.
