Oshawa Generals News Release
It was rivalry night in Oshawa as the Generals took on the Peterborough Petes in their final meeting of the season. The Generals were looking to finish the season series in dominating fashion as they aimed for their seventh straight victory over their long-standing rival.
1st Period:
There was a fast and furious pace to start the game with the Generals putting on the pressure early leading to their first powerplay opportunity. Despite not scoring, the PP unit created several solid looks as the continued to test Jones. The line of Krastenbergs, Studnicka and Noel were flying early on, teaming up on a few good chances that nearly connected. Midway through the period, things began to get heated between the two rivals as a hard collision at centre ice sparked a scrum and after the teams separated the Gens headed to the man advantage. Unfortunately, the home team was unable to capitalize but they would soon get another opportunity late in the period during a double minor. The Petes PK unit was aggressive and limited the Gennies time and space as they looked to get set up. After one, the game remained scoreless with Oshawa holding the edge in shots 14-6.
2nd Period:
A minute into the second, just after the double minor to Peterborough expired, Renars Krastenbergs brought a packed home crowd to their feet when he tapped in a rebound shot for his 21st goal of the season to give the Gens a 1-0 lead. Moments later, the Petes responded when Pavel Gogolev got a back-hander passed Keyser to tie the game 1-1. While short-handed, Kenny Huether had a golden opportunity on a breakaway rush where he fired a shot off the crossbar but Jack Studnicka followed up the play and sniped his 22nd goal of the season to restore the Gens one-goal lead. Minutes later, the Petes struck back on a 3-on-1 rush to tie the game 2-2. Soon after a successful Gens penalty kill, the makeshift line of Studnicka Huether and Krastenbergs hooked up for an excellent scoring opportunity that went just wide. At 7:36 of the period, Gogolev tallied his second of the game to put the Petes in front 3-2. On their fourth powerplay of the night, Matt Brassard ripped home his 16th goal of the season to tie the game 3-3. On a delayed Generals penalty, with less than two seconds left on the clock, the Petes scored to take a 4-3 lead heading into the third period. Shots at the end of two were Oshawa 30 Peterborough 15.
3rd Period:
The Generals came out determined to start the third period as they looked to bounce back after the Petes late go-ahead goal. But at 17:55 of the period, Peterborough scored to extend their lead 5-3. With lots of time left in the period, the Gens worked to cut into their deficit. At 14:04 of the period, Serron Noel found the back of the net for his 28th goal of the season to make it a 5-4 game much to the delight of the Gens faithful. However a couple minutes later, the Petes got it right back when they scored to restore their two-goal lead. Showing no quit, the guys continued to battle a create some great chances including an incredible passing play between Krastenbergs Studnicka and Noel that very nearly converted. The bad blood was brewing midway through the period where the physical play picked up substantially as the boards rattled and the bodies crashed. At 7:26 of the period, the Petes tallied to go up 7-4. With less than three minutes left, tempers boiled over when Mitchell Brewer dropped the gloves with Bobby Dow in a spirited tilt.
