Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, MD - The Dash offense was stifled once again on Saturday night as the Keys used a terrific start by Rick Zagone and won 6-1 at Harry Grove Stadium. Winston-Salem dropped its third straight game and saw the end of its six-series winning streak.
Frederick (30-18, 71-46) built its lead in the third inning against Cameron Bayne, who was making a bid for his league-leading 12th win of the season. Kipp Schutz led off the inning with a double and later scored on Jonathan Schoop's single to center. After a walk to Aaron Baker loaded the bases with one out, Miguel Abreu doubled to the left field corner, bringing two Keys homeward to make it 3-0 Frederick.
Brian Ward upped the lead to four with an RBI single in the fifth inning, scoring Dale Mollenhauer, and Schutz homered to start the sixth to give the Keys a 5-0 advantage.
After scraping just two singles over the first seven innings, Winston-Salem (26-21, 58-59) finally broke through in the eighth. Daniel Wagner singled with one out and scored two batters later on Jared Mitchell's fielder's choice. The rally was snuffed out when Randy Henry struck out Andy Wilkins to end the inning.
Frederick scored one more time in the eighth inning on Schoop's RBI double to return the lead to five runs.
Zagone (3-1) got the win with six shutout innings, during which he yielded just two hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Bayne (11-5) was the loser, surrendering five runs on eight hits in six innings.
The Dash offense has scored just eight runs in the last four games, losing the last three. The three-game losing streak is the team's first since dropping three in a row July 16 - 18 and the series defeat is the first since Kinston won three out of four against Winston-Salem from July 17 - 20.
The series and the seven-game road trip finish on Sunday afternoon when RHP Jake Petricka (2-6, 4.50) starts opposite LHP Nick Haughian (8-5, 3.64). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the audio broadcast begins at 1:45 at www.wsdash.com .
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for a pair of games against the Lynchburg Hillcats on Monday at 6 p.m. Fans may purchase tickets for every game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or by visiting www.wsdash.com .
