Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA -Archie Gilbert had three hits and a run scored from the leadoff spot, Paul Demny pitched eight strong innings and combined with Marcos Frias to hold off the Pelicans late as the Potomac Nationals took down Myrtle Beach with a 3-2 win in Saturday's third game of a weekend set at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium.

For the second straight night, the Pelicans were unable to capitalize on a solid effort from their starter, this time with Kennil Gomez going six good innings of his own, limiting the Nationals to two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Friday night, it was Wilfredo Boscan whose six innings of one-run ball were fruitless thanks to the same struggles that hampered Myrtle Beach on Saturday. By the time Gomez (2-3) exited after the sixth, the Pelicans were through their 17th of an eventual 18 straight innings without touching home plate dating back to their five-run seventh on Thursday's 12-5 win in the series opener.

Potomac got on top against Gomez and the Pelicans early with a run on a Destin Hood sacrifice fly scoring Gilbert in the first and added to their lead with an RBI Sandy Leon double plating Steven Souza in the sixth, bookending Gomez's day. The Pelicans were powerless to match Potomac's offensive push thanks to Demny (8-10) who struck out four and allowed just three hits in his first seven innings.

After the Nationals added a run on Joe Ortiz in the seventh, the Pelicans finally broke through against Demny in his final inning. The first three batters of the inning combined for two runs, with Jared Hoying's leadoff double being cashed in on David Paisano's subsequent triple and Paisano coming home on Andres James's grounder to the right side to make it a 3-2 game. Demny retired the final two in order to close out his victorious night.

Despite getting the leadoff man aboard in the top of the ninth, though, the Pelicans were unable to scratch the tying run across. Travis Adair's leadoff single went nowhere after a flyout by Jared Prince and two strikeouts by Ryan Strausborger and Zach Zaneski. The two clubs played the last three innings through a driving rain. Frias (S, 1) got the last three outs for Potomac.

Myrtle Beach will try to avoid a loss in both the weekend and season series against Potomac with Sunday's finale at Pfitzner Stadium. Myrtle Beach will send right-hander Justin Grimm (3-2. 3.55) against Potomac righty Cameron Selik (4-8, 4.33) with the finale's first pitch slated for 1:05 p.m. After their Saturday win, the Nationals have pulled ahead in the 2011 season series between the two teams 10-9.
