Reading Fightin Phils News Release

(Reading, PA) - It was a quiet night offensively for the Reading Fightin Phils in a 4-1 loss to the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Saturday night. Richmond now holds a 3-1 lead in this week's series.

Mason Black was spectacular in the start for Richmond. The right hander pitched a perfect five innings and garnered eight strikeouts. In total, Reading struck out a season-tying 17 times to the Richmond pitching staff.

For the fourth time this series, the Flying Squirrels struck first. Hayden Cantrelle reached first with a walk. Jimmy Glowenke followed that up with a blast over the left field wall off Reading starting pitcher David Parkinson. His first homer of the season gave Richmond a 2-0 lead.

The Squirrels added another in the top of the fifth on an inside-the-park home run from Wade Meckler. He hit a fly ball to deep left center field that caused center fielder Carlos De La Cruz to run into left fielder Matthew Kroon. Meckler came all the way around to record an inside-the-park home run to make it 3-0 Richmond. Kroon exited the game after the play.

The Flying Squirrels scored for the third inning in a row courtesy of back-to-back doubles from Cantrelle and Simon Whiteman. The double in the sixth gave Whiteman the RBI and made it 4-0 Richmond.

Spencer Bivens came in for relief of Black in the top of the sixth. Although Cody Roberts finally broke up the perfect game with a double, Bivens struck out three batters in the inning to get out of with no damage.

Reading put up a fight in the bottom of the ninth. Carlos De La Cruz singled first off reliever Jose Cruz. De La Cruz later scored thanks to a single by Oliver Dunn to make it 4-1 Richmond. It was ultimately not enough, as Cruz would close things out to give Richmond the win.

Mason Black earned the win for Richmond to improve to 1-4 on the season and David Parkinson suffered the loss for Reading to fall to 2-4. With the win, Richmond improves to 3-1 in the second half and Reading falls to 1-3 in the second half with the loss.
