Bats Quiet Again as Salem Takes Series

Winston-Salem Dash News Release

SALEM, VA (MAY 27, 2010) - Stolmy Pimentel threw six no-hit innings for Salem and the Dash could only manage one run for the second straight night as the Red Sox beat Winston 2-1 on Thursday night at Lewis-Gale Field. Salem clinched the series victory with the win and moved to within four games of the Dash for first place in the Southern Division.

The Red Sox (28-19) scored the game's first run off Stephen Sauer in the second inning. Mitch Dening singled to with one out, then stole second base and moved to third when Jason Bour's throw skipped into center field. Alex Hassan grounded out to second base, allowing Dening to score from third to give Salem the lead.

Winston-Salem (32-15) could do nothing against Pimentel, who kept the Dash off-balance with his pitch selection and execution. He took a perfect game into the fifth inning. Jason Bour walked on a 3-2 pitch with two outs to end the bid and get the first Winston player on base.

The walk would be Pimentel's only blemish on the night, as he exited the game after six innings. He allowed no hits while striking out six. It was the second time this season he left a start after pitching six no-hit innings. The other was against Myrtle Beach on May 15.

Jeremy Kehrt relieved Pimentel in the seventh and retired the first two men he faced. He then hit Seth Loman with a pitch and surrendered a double to Ozzie Lewis. Loman scored on the play as the Dash ended the no hitter and the shutout on the same play, tying the game at one. Kehrt walked the next two batters to load the bases, but retired Jordan Cheatham on a grounder to second to escape the jam and leave the bases loaded.

Salem re-claimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Sauer (4-2) loaded the bases with one out, then allowed an RBI single to Alex Hassan to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead. Sauer was able to retire the next two batters, but the one-run cushion proved to be enough for Salem.

Kehrt (3-1) threw two scoreless innings to finish off the Dash and collect the win.

Sauer allowed just two runs (one earned run) over seven innings, but was saddled with his second loss of the season. The defeat snapped his three-start winning streak.

Winston's offense was held to three hits in the game, tying for the team's lowest output of the season. The Dash scored just five runs in the three-game series and has lost two in a row for just the fifth time all year.

Winston-Salem continues its nine-game road trip on Friday night when the team starts a three-game weekend series with the Kinston Indians. RHP Nate Jones (4-1, 3.94) opposes LHP T.J. House (1-3, 3.30) in a 7 p.m. start. The game will be broadcast on www.wsdash.com, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45.

The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on June 3 for a four-game series against the Kinston Indians.
