Pimentel's Near Perfection Vaults Sox Past Dash

Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA (May 27, 2010)- Stolmy Pimentel threw six no-hit innings and Alex Hassan accounted for both Salem RBI's as the Red Sox defeated the Winston-Salem Dash 2-1 on Thursday night at Lewis-Gale Field. The win gave Salem the series victory and pulled the Sox to within four games of the Southern Division lead.

Pimentel was nearly perfect for the Sox, striking out six in his six innings of work. The right-hander retired 18 of the 19 batters he faced, with the lone batter reaching on a two-out walk in the fifth. The Dash only hit three balls out of the infield against Pimentel in his six frames, with the right-hander tossing six hitless innings for the second time in his last three starts.

Stephen Sauer (4-2) was almost as good as Pimentel for six innings, but things unraveled a little bit in the seventh for the Dash starter. Winston was able to scratch across a run to tie the game in the top of the seventh off reliever Jeremey Kehrt, but the Sox were able to respond against Sauer in the bottom of the inning. Will Middlebrooks and Ryan Lavarnway singled to lead off the frame, and after a Tim Federowicz groundout advanced the runners into scoring position, Dening was intentionally walked to load the bases. Hassan stepped to the plate and rocketed a single back up the middle to drive in Middlebrooks for his second RBI that reclaimed the one-run advantage for the Sox. Salem seemed poised for a big inning, but the Dash cut down Lavarnway at the plate on a weak ground ball to first baseman Seth Loman. Jon Hee then flew out to end the threat and leave the bases loaded.

The Dash, who had managed just one hit in the first eight innings, recorded two singles in the ninth, but a 3-6-3 double play off the bat of Loman helped Kehrt (3-1) and the Red Sox escape with the victory. The Red Sox held Winston-Salem and their bona fide top ranked offense to just five runs on 14 hits in the three game series, limiting them to a .159 batting average (14-88). The three Salem starters, Caleb Clay, Alex Wilson and Pimentel, combined to throw 18 innings, allowing just one run on six hits with 16 strikeouts.

Salem took the early lead thanks to outfielder Mitch Dening, who extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single to center field with one out in the second. After stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error by the catcher, Dening came home on a groundout by Hassan to give the Sox a 1-0 lead. Winston-Salem prevented Pimentel from picking up the win with a two-out double off the bat of Ozzie Lewis in the seventh, but the Red Sox immediate retaliation lifted Salem to the all-important series victory.

With his two RBI, Hassan recorded his fourth multi-RBI game of the season. Peter Hissey was the lone Red Sox player with multiple hits, as he finished 2-for-3 with a stolen base. The Salem center fielder led the Sox offense in the series, going 5-for-11 with three RBI.

Salem will now embark on a six-game road trip with stops in Potomac and Lynchburg. The Sox will start a three-game series against the Nationals on Friday night at Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge, VA at 7:03. Brock Huntzinger will get the ball for Salem against the P-Nats' Brad Peacock.
