Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY - Despite not registering a hit until the sixth inning, the Tri-City ValleyCats (27-21) managed four runs in the final three frames to beat the Brooklyn Cyclones (24-24) in front of 5,356 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium Saturday night. With the win, the 'Cats keep pace with Stedler Division-leader Lowell, who beat Staten Island.
The Cyclones got the scoring started in the second inning when they capitalized on two ValleyCats errors. Gene Cone led off with a single, and stole second base, his first swipe of the sesaon. He advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Chuckie Robinson (1). Blake Tiberi grounded a ball to Jones, who let the ball deflect off of his chest, allowing Cone to score the only run (unearned) for Brooklyn all game.
Brooklyn lefty Thomas Szapucki (1-2) suffered the loss despite a dominant performance in which he struck out 11 of the 16 batters he retired. He held the ValleyCats without a hit until Brauly Mejia doubled in the bottom of the 6th, scoring Marcos Almonte, who had reached on one of four walks Szapucki issued.
Mejia eventually came around to score on Taylor Jones' RBI single off of Taylor Henry later in the 6th to give the 'Cats a 2-1 lead.
Tri-City added one run in each of the seventh and eighth innings to pad the lead. Tyler Wolfe cranked his first professional home run in the seventh, a 377 foot solo shot to left field. In the eighth frame, Robinson led off with a walk and came around to score on a Spencer Johnson double to left to give the 'Cats a 4-1 lead, solidifying a series-opening win.
Enrique Chavez, who made his fifth start for the 'Cats, struck out three in five innings, surrendering just two hits. Sean Stutzman (2-2) picked up his second win of the season in one inning of scoreless relief, before Dustin Hunt earned his first professional save to close out the game. Hunt tossed the final three innings, striking out four and allowing just two baserunners.
The 'Cats host the Cyclones in game two tomorrow night, August 7, at 5:00 p.m. Kevin Hill (1-2, 3.50) will get the ball for Tri-City, making his third start (eighth appearance).
