Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
TROY, NY - August 6, 2016 - Another terrific start by LHP Thomas Szapucki gone to waste as the ValleyCats top the Cyclones 3-1 Saturday night.
The Cyclones scored the night's first run in the second inning when Gene Cone singled on a soft fly ball to center field. He was put into scoring position after he stole second and then reached third on a throwing error by ValleyCats catcher Chuckie Robinson. With one out, Blake Tiberi tallied an RBI after he reached base on a botched by first baseman Taylor Jones.
Tri-City did not touch Szapucki thorough the first five innings of play. The lefhander did not give up a hit and struck out 11 during that span. Szapucki ran into some trouble in the top of the sixth when he walked leadoff batter Marcus Almonte. Alomonte moved into scoring position after he stole second and moved to third following a throwing error by Cyclones catcher Brandon Brosher. The ValleyCats evened the score after Brauly Mejia doubled on a fly ball to center field. Szapucki was done for the night as Taylor Henry took to the mound. Before working himself out of the inning Henry gave up consecutive singles to give the ValleyCats a 2-1 lead.
Tri-City furthered their lead to 3-1 after Henry gave up a solo shot by Tyler Wolfe that sailed over the left field fence.
Ty William struggled in the eighth opening up the inning with a Chuckie Robinson walk. Robinson moved into scoring position after Williams threw a wild pitch and was later driven home after Spencer Johnson knocked a RBI-double.
Brooklyn will look to rebound from their two-game skid tomorrow night at 5:00 P.M. as Erik Manoah (5-1, 3.53 ERA) takes to the mound.
