BURLINGTON, VT --- The State College Spikes snapped a scoreless tie in with three runs in the top of the 11th inning and held on to hand the Vermont Lake Monsters their sixth straight loss with a 3-2 New York-Penn League victory Saturday night at historic Centennial Field.

The Spikes Vince Jackson singled with one out and stole second with two outs in the 11th before scoring on Eiler Rodriguez's groundball single to rightfield for the first run of the game. State College added two more runs, both unearned, including a Danny Hudzina RBI double for a 3-0 lead. Those insurance runs were key as Vermont's Jhonny Rodriguez smashed a 395-foot two-out, two-run homer to right in the bottom of the 11th to cut the deficit to 3-2.

It marked the second time in the last four games that the Lake Monsters have been outscored 3-2 in the 11th inning (took 6-4 lead in 11th at Lowell on August 3rd before Spinners scored three runs in bottom of inning). Vermont has now lost 12 of its last 14 games with a pair of six-game losing streaks sandwiched around a two-game winning streak.

Vermont had allowed 50 runs over the first five games of the losing streak, but starter Dakota Chalmers and reliever Brandon Bailey kept the Spikes off the scoreboard for the first 10 innings. Chalmers allowed just two hits with two walks, three strikeouts and needing to throw just 72 pitches to get through the first six innings. Bailey went the next 3 1/3 innings, allowing one hit, two walks and striking out four.

But the Lake Monsters offense couldn't push across a run of their own as State College starteer Harley Holt scattered five hits over four innings and a trio of Spikes relievers combined to give up just one hit with three walks and eighth strikeouts over the next six innings. Vermont loaded the bases with two outs in the third and had the potential winning run at second base with two outs in the ninth for their best two chances of the game.

Rodriguez was 3-for-5 with a double and the two-run homer for Vermont (19-29), while Eli White went 2-for-5. Nate Mondou was 0-for-2, but walked three times to extend his team record consecutive on base streak to 28 games (longest in NYPL this season). Hudzina was 2-for-5 with a run, double and RBI for State College (33-15).

Vermont and State College will play the second of the three-game series at Centennial on Sunday starting at 5:05 pm. The Lake Monsters will celebrate CHAMP's Birthday with a special appearance by the ZOOperstars. Fans can also "Have A Catch" in the outfield following the game.
