West Virginia Black Bears News Release
GRANVILLE, W.Va. - Black Bears' C Chris Harvey drilled a two RBI walk-off double in the tenth inning to guide West Virginia to a 3-2 win on Saturday night from Monongalia County Ballpark. The victory snaps West Virginia's seven game losing streak.
Williamsport got out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI double off the top of the left field wall from DH Luis Encarnacion. But, this was the only damage to Black Bears' starter RHP Danny Beddes. The Utah Valley product was dominant through six innings and received a no decision allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out four hitters.
For the duration of the game, the Black Bears' offense struggled to find a rhythm against Crosscutters' starter LHP JoJo Romero who fanned five batters through six scoreless innings on five hits and also received a no-decision. West Virginia reliever LHP Cristian Mota had an excellent outing out of the bullpen hurling 2.1 innings scoreless.
In the ninth inning, West Virginia's offense found success as they loaded the bases on singles from 1B Albert Baur and Harvey along with a walk to 2B Nick King. CF Clark Eagan came to the plate with two outs and the game on the line and worked an RBI walk to even the score, 1-1.
Manager Wyatt Toregas went to the Black Bears' bullpen in the tenth inning as reliever RHP Matt Anderson entered on the hill and recorded the win not allowing an earned run in the frame. After a single from CF David Martinelli and a walk issued to 1B Darick Hall, Martinelli crossed the plate on a Black Bears' error.
But the Black Bears would respond in the bottom of the frame, as walks to RF Kevin Krause and PH Sandy Santos in addition to LF Ty Moore's double set the stage for Harvey's walk-off two RBI double. Crosscutters' reliever LHP Scott Harris took the loss allowing two earned runs in the final inning.
Eagan and Harvey had two hits each to pace the Black Bears' nine-hit offense while 3B Will Craig lined a single to left field in the third inning to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Martinelli guided the Crosscutters offensively going 3-for-5 with a run scored.
The Black Bears (21-27) and Crosscutters (28-20) will battle in the second game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 4:05 PM from Monongalia County Ballpark on Family Sunday.
