Birmingham Barons News Release

Birmingham AL: In conjunction with the Birmingham Barons LLC and Jefferson County School System, the American Baseball Foundation has attracted more than 85 kids to learn to appreciate the value of reading as related to sports. Reading through the Journal of Biddy Owens, the equipment manager of the 1948 Birmingham Black Barons, thg children gain a sense of what conditions were like when Birmingham natives, Willy Mays and Piper Davis lead the team to the finals of the Negro League Championship. Leaving the books behind the children rotate through baseball/softball skill stations and soccer fundamentals practice, to experience first-hand the work ethic of all professional athletes.

Now in its 15th year BASIC offers summer reading fun for children ages 7-12 in an effort to combat summer reading loss that may amount to two months of reading loss due to inactivity. There are no virtual games to be found as the BASIC children sprint from reading to competing.

The ABF is proud to list the 2012 BASIC sponsors:

Academy Sports & Outdoors, All Star Sports, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, Jefferson County School System, Jugs Sports, Inc, Mizuno USA, PUBLIX SUPER MARKERTS CHARITIES, Rawlings, Wilson Sporting Goods, Dick's Sporting Goods
