San Jose Barracuda News Release
San Jose, Ca - Monday was Orange You Glad Day as the San Jose Barracuda (28-12-2-4) played the San Diego Gulls (27-16-3-3) (Anaheim Ducks) wearing orange specialty jerseys for the first and only time in 2018-19. After twice falling behind in the opening 20 minutes, the Barracuda would close out the frame with three unanswered before adding one more in the second en-route to a 5-2 win in front of a season-high 6,027 fans at the SAP Center at San Jose.
Just four minutes and two seconds into the game, Sam Steel (14) would take a breakaway pass from Adam Cracknell and chip a shot over the shoulder of Josef Korenar to give San Diego a 1-0 lead. However, San Jose answered back quickly at the 5:48 mark when Jeremy Roy (9) beat a screened Jeff Glass to tie the game at one from the right point. The Gulls would jump ahead later in the period on a man-advantage when Sam Carrick (25) jammed in his third goal in two games from the bottom of the left faceoff circle to give the Gulls the lead back. Quickly after SD took the lead, San Jose would answer with a gorgeous cross-ice pass from Jeffrey Viel which was buried top corner by Alexander True (16) to tie the game at 2-2 with 11:29 remaining in the first period. San Jose would score a power-play goal of their own at the 12:30 mark of the first period when a great zone keep by Francis Perron was chipped behind the net to Dylan Gambrell who dished a pass to True (17) who powered a one-timer past Glass to give the 'Cuda a 3-2 lead. Maxim Letunov (9) completed the four-goal period when he tipped a Kyle Wood wrister from the point.
The four goals by the Barracuda in the first period matched their season high for goals in a period and the six combined goals also matched the season high in that category. San Jose stretched their lead to 5-2 and got their second power-play goal of the afternoon at 10:38 of the second when Rourke Chartier (6) roofed a rebound from right atop the the crease and extended the 'Cuda lead to three. That would be the lone goal for the second period, as San Jose would ride a 5-2 lead into the third period.
The third period saw no action on the scoresheet, as the game remained 5-2 through the final whistle. The win snaps a five-game skid against San Diego and moves the Barracuda into sole possession of second place in the AHL's Pacific Division.
Korenar (17-5-1) earned the victory by making 25 saves on 27 shots while Glass (8-7-2) took the loss after giving up five goals on 38 shots.
Next up for the Barracuda is a road trip to Iowa for two games against Iowa Wild starting on Thursday, January 21st at 5 p.m. PT. You can tune in to Thursday's game live on the Sharks App or watch the game on AHL TV.
