Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons overcame a late 3-0 deficit to defeat the Chattanooga Lookouts 4-3 on a walk-off walk in front of 4117 fans at Regions Field.
Bryan Blough struck out one and didn't allow a hit over 4.0 scoreless innings to begin the game but ran into trouble in the fifth. In the inning, the Lookouts scored three runs highlighted by a two-run double from Darnell Sweeney, giving the Chattanooga a 3-0 lead.
Chattanooga starter Chris Reed baffled the Barons for much of the night, allowing four hits and a run while striking out six over 7.0 innings. However, a walk to Christian Marrero and base hits by Dan Wagner and Chris Curley loaded the bases and chased Reed from the game. Trayce Thompson followed with a sacrifice fly toright field, scoring Marrero from third base. The right fielder threw wildly back into the infield on the play, allowing Dan Wagner to score from secondbase to tie the game at 3-3.
The Barons capped the comeback thanks to a series of wild events in the ninth inning. Michael Earley led off the inning with a base hit up the middle. The next batter, Joe De Pinto, attempted to bunt Earley into scoring position but was hit by the 1-0 pitch from pitcher Juan Gonzalez (0-3, 3.24).
Jeremy Farrell, who also attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt, appeared to be hit by the 1-0 pitch but it was called a missed bunt by the home plate umpire. Farrell was then ejected for arguing the call and replaced by Luis Sierra who successfully bunted the runners over to second and third base respectively. After an intentional walk to Christian Marrero, Dan Wagner worked a full count against Juan Ramon before taking the payoff pitch low and inside, forcing home Earley with the winning run and setting off a mob scene behind first base.
Ryan Kussmaul (3-0, 3.38) picked up the win after striking out the only batter he faced in the eighth inning.
The Barons will look to pick up a series victory tomorrow night as LHP Scott Snodgress (2-3, 4.44) takes the hill against RHP Andres Santiago (1-3, 5.70). First pitch is schedule for 7:05 PM CDT.
