Griffin Named Southern League Hitter of the Week

MOBILE, AL -- The Southern League announced this week that BayBears first baseman Jon Griffin has been named the league's Hitter of the Week for the time period between May 19-25.

Griffin's 5-for-6 performance against the Tennessee Smokies on May 21 aided the BayBears to a 17-7 win. In the same game, Griffin powered four straight home runs in his final four at bats. The 25-year-old first baseman, finished with seven RBI for the game and the four homers bested Tagg Bozied's 2005 team record of three long balls. Griffin became just the second player in Southern League history to go yard four times. George Kalafatis accomplished the feat 44 years earlier on July 1, 1969 for the Montgomery Rebels.

The following day Griffin grab national media attention when he hit a home run in his first at bat against the Smokies on May 22.The four bagger was Griffin's fifth home run in five consecutive at bats.

A 21st-round selection by the Diamondbacks in 2011, Griffin is the third BayBears player to earn weekly honors from the Southern League this season, joining the company of Infielder/Outfielder Mike Freeman for his performance as the league's best hitter April 21-27 and RHP Chase Anderson who was awarded the League's best pitcher honors for the week of April 3rd - 13th.

The Bradenton, FL native finished the week with a line of 9-for-23, 6 HR, 10 RBI. Through the first 51 games of the 2014 campaign, Griffin is batting .259 with 10 homers and 30 RBI.
