Jackson Generals News Release
MOBILE, AL - The Generals (22-31) split their double header with the Mobile BayBears (32-21) at Hank Aaron Stadium on Thursday. Jackson fell in the first game 2-1, and dropped to just 2-7 in one-run games on the year. But the Generals found some offense in game two as Patrick Kivlehan (2x6, R, 4 RBI, HR) hit a three-run homer to help power the team past Mobile 4-1.
It took four innings and a rain delay for the offenses to get going in game one. Ketel Marte (3x6, 2 R, RBI) singled and Leon Landry (1x5, BB) walked to lead off the fourth. They both moved up 90 feet on a fly out to left by Dan Paolini (2x6, R) and Marte scored when Kivlehan grounded into a fielder's choice. Jackson then loaded the bases, but could not score any more and led 1-0.
Garrett Weber singled to begin the bottom of the fourth and was followed by Raywilly Gomez's third home run of the season. The two-run shot to right gave Mobile a 2-1 lead after four innings.
Willy Paredes started and only went 3.1 innings for Mobile, but the BayBears bullpen shut out the Generals over the final three innings to preserve their 2-1 win. Patrick Schuster (2-0, 1.59) earned his second win on the season while Jake Barrett picked up his ninth save.
Jackson only used two pitchers, but Victor Sanchez (1-2, 5.40) fell to 1-2 with the loss. He gave up both Mobile runs but struck out three and only walked two in 4.0 innings of work.
Mickey Wiswall (1x2, BB) and Kivlehan extended their hitting streaks to 11 and seven games respectively while Paolini's 9-game hit streak was snapped. Marte was also a bright spot offensively picking up two hits.
Game two began unfavorably for the Generals as Mobile scored a run on an error by Mike Dowd (0x3) in the second inning. Dowd threw behind John Griffin on third and the ball hit Griffin, bouncing into left field, allowing the BayBears first baseman to bring home the first run.
Kivlehan came to the rescue of starter Trevor Miller (4-5, 4.08) in the fourth. With two on and two out, Kivlehan hit his second Generals home run and Jackson took a 3-1 lead. The long ball also extended Kivlehan's hitting streak to eight games.
Jackson added an insurance run in the sixth. Back-to-back doubles by Jamal Austin (3x3, R) and Marte scored Austin and the lead grew to 4-1.
Miller was solid, going 6.0 innings giving up just one unearned run on two hits. He retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced and received his fourth win in his last five starts. Stephen Kohlscheen (1-1, 4 SV, 1.33) came out of the bullpen and picked up his second save of the series as he pitched the final inning scoreless for Jackson. Charles Brewer also went six innings for Mobile, but earned the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits.
Austin earned his second three-hit game of the year and Paolini made up for losing his hitting streak in the first game with two hits of his own.
The Generals and BayBears will play the rubber match of the five game series on Friday in Mobile. Jackson will look to send Cam Hobson (4-3, 3.40) to the mound to end their series winless streak while Mike Lee (3-3, 3.97) will be on the hill for the BayBears. The game will be at 7:05 pm and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
