Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A 13 inning melee at Regions Field Monday morning ended with Christian Marrero recording his second walk-off hit of the series to lead the Barons over Tennessee 4-3. Birmingham won the five-game series with the Monday contest and set a new attendance record for the home stand.

After hosting the largest Sunday attendance in the fourth game, Monday's crowd of 6,241 became the largest to watch a Barons game on a Monday at Regions Field and pushed the series' attendance to 35,988 - the most fans to attend a five-game series at Regions Field.

Birmingham posted two runs in the third, and Tennessee answered with runs in the fifth and seventh to tie the game 2-2 to signal the beginning of a five-inning gridlock. From the beginning of the eighth until the end of the 12th inning, both team combined for just five hits while leaving seven base runners stranded.

Neither team scored again until the top of the 13th when Tennessee took a 3-2 lead on a Dan Vogelbach sacrifice fly to score Ryan Dent from third. However, the Barons stormed back in the bottom of the inning.

Marcus Lemon led off with a walk allowed by closer Zach Cates and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt by the Smokies hurler. The next three batters - Tim Anderson, Jacob May and Courtney Hawkins - lined out, flied out and struck out, but the game did not end there. The strike out dealt to Hawkins was swung on and skipped away as a wild pitch. Hawkins advanced safely to first and Lemon reached third. With Marrero batting, Cates threw a second wild pitch to move Hawkins into scoring position. Two on, two out and Marrero facing a 3-2 count, the Barons catcher lifted a fly ball to right that landed fair within inches of the line. Lemon and Hawkins crossed to record Birmingham's third walk-off win of the year.

Birmingham finished the evening with six hits and reliever Kyle Hansen picked up the win to improve to 1-1 on the season. The Barons allowed 11 hits to Tennessee, but the Smokies struggled to score runs. Tennessee stranded 40 runners.

The Barons are on the road May 6-10 as they take on in-state rival Montgomery in a five-game set. Wednesday's game is set for 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live on WERC FM and WERCFM.com. The Barons return to Regions Field April 11 to host Chattanooga for the week.
