Southern League Names Pitcher and Player of the Week for April 27-May 3rd

MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for April 27th through May 3rd. Righthander Jared Mortensen of the Montgomery Biscuits was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while Chattanooga Lookouts centerfielder Byron Buxton was chosen as Player of the Week.

In 13 innings over two starts last week, Mortensen recorded a perfect 0.00 ERA with five strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.08. In his first outing on April 27th against Jackson, the Abbotsford, British Columbia native fired seven innings, allowing an unearned run on six hits and five strikeouts, tossing 67 of his 94 pitches for strikes. He followed with another strong performance in the Biscuits 7-2 victory at Mississippi on May 3rd. In six innings of work, the Louisiana State-Shreveport product did not allow a run, while giving up just four hits to earn his second win of the season. Signed by Tampa Bay as a minor league free agent in August of 2013, this is Mortensen's first career Player of the Week Award.

In seven games last week, Buxton posted a .483 batting average with 11 runs, 14 hits, six extra-base hits, 24 total bases, a pair of doubles, four triples and five stolen bases. Furthermore, he earned a .543 on-base percentage and slugging percentage of .828. Buxton led the league in runs, total bases and triples, and tied for the league lead in extra-base hits, while his batting average, hits, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS of 1.370 were all top five numbers. His biggest performance of the week came in the Lookouts 7-3 win over Jacksonville on May 1st, where the 2013 Minor League Player of the Year went 3-for-5 at the plate, with a double, two triples and two runs scored. This is Buxton's third career Player of the Week Award after he earned Florida State League honors on July 29th of 2013 and July 21st of 2014.
