Birmingham Barons News Release

The Birmingham Barons late-inning rally was picked off Sunday as the team fell for the second-straight night at home to the Jacksonville Suns, 7-6.

Eduardo Escobar led off the ninth inning with a double to right-center field and moved to third base on a bunt from Tyler Kuhn. A two-out walk to Jim Gallagher brought Christian Marrero to the plate with a chance to tie the game, but the slugging first baseman never had a chance to swing the bat as Jacksonville closer Matt Petersen caught Gallagher napping at first base for the final out.

The offensive showdown featured four lead changes and 22 combined hits. The Barons struck first in the second inning. Cole Armstrong led off the inning by crushing a one-out double to right field; Armstrong would score ahead of a two out single by John Shelby III. Shelby nabbed second on an ill attempt to throw out Armstrong at home then easily stole third before trotting home to score on a two-out a single by Escobar into centerfield.

It took one inning for the Suns to strike back. Three-consecutive singles from the visitors brought in another run, and set up a three-run blast by Vinny Rottino that made the game 4-2.

The Barons took the lead back in the fifth inning. Christian Marrero lined a one-out double to right field that brought Cole Armstrong to the plate. Armstrong followed with a two-out single to bring Marrero home and give the Barons the lead, 6-5.

A leadoff walk by Ryan Curry in the seventh inning led to the Suns' tying the gameOsvaldo Martinez's hit a line drive triple to the gap in right-center field that glanced off Justin Greene's glove and plated Curry. A sacrifice fly by Brandon Tripp was enough to bring in Martinez and seal the final score 7-6.

Kyle McCulloch (0-0, 3.71) cruised through his start with the exception of a four run 3^rd inning, going 5.0 innings pitched with five runs while striking out four and issuing no walks. The loss was credited to Angel Garcia (1-3, 6.66).
