Mobile BayBears News Release
Sending nine men to the plate and scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 2-2 tie, the BayBears defeated the Mississippi Braves, 5-2, on Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, scoring a doubleheader split after a 3-1 loss in game one.
Jaye Chapman (1-4) entered out of the Mississippi (44-49, 14-11) bullpen in the sixth to spell Tim Gustafson, who held the BayBears (50-43, 14-11) to two runs in five innings. Chapman walked Bryan Byrne with one out before giving up a single to Sean Coughlin and double to Cyle Hankerd which allowed Byrne to score.
After a second out was made, Konrad Schmidt was walked intentionally while Evan Frey picked up an RBI single to make it 4-2. A bases-loaded pass to Ollie Linton brought home Hankerd and gave the local nine a three-run cushion.
Daniel Stange (S, 2) worked around a pair of walks in the seventh without giving up a hit to shut it down for Pat McAnaney (4-8). McAnaney allowed two runs in six frames while fanning six. Willie Cabrera doubled and scored in the first on a single by Mauro Gomez before homering in the third to put the Braves in front, 2-1.
In the opener of the twinbill, Tom Layne (9-5) was hampered by a lack of run support. Layne was given a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Schmidt drove home Frey with a two-out double against Jacob Thompson (6-7). Thompson only surrendered three hits in six innings while punching out five.
Mississippi claimed the advantage in the third when Shawn McGill scored on a single by Tyler Pastornicky. Antoan Richardson, who advanced to third on Pastornicky's single, scored on a throwing error by Schmidt to put the Braves on top. They added a run in the fifth when Richardson singled home Donell Linares.
The BayBears did have a potential threat in the sixth, but Jake Elmore flied out to right with the bases loaded. Tim Collins (S, 1) uncovered a double play ball off the bat of Collin Cowgill to finish the ballgame.
The BayBears wrap up their seven-game homestand against the Braves on Tuesday night with a 7:05 first pitch at Hank Aaron Stadium. The BayBears have also announced that Whiplash the Cowboy Monkey will be coming to Hank Aaron Stadium on Wednesday, August 11 and Thursday, August 12 for a special, two-day appearance in Mobile.
