Knoxville Smokies News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - Chris Archer continued his brilliant pitching for the Tennessee Smokies Monday night. Scattering seven hits over 5.1 innings, he led the Smokies to 4-2 win over the Montgomery Biscuits in a rain-shortened game at Smokies Park. The win puts Tennessee at 55-39 on the year, 13-12 in the season's second half.
Since his promotion on June 28, Archer has already become one of the team's top starters. Monday's start mirrored that of his previous three in a Smokies uniform, as he did not allow an earned run in the game. He threw 60 of his 93 pitches for strikes, striking out six and walking only one. In 19 starts this year between High-A Daytona and Tennessee, Archer is 10-2 and has struck out 102 batters in only 94.2 innings pitched.
Archer's strong performance would not require much run support from the Smokies offense, but his teammates delivered anyways. Brandon Guyer put Tennessee up 2-0 in the second as he drilled an Alex Cobb (4-3) pitch into the left field berm. It was his ninth home run of the year.
In the fourth, Matt Spencer began another Tennessee rally with a leadoff double. After the Smokies loaded the bases, Tony Campana singled to left to bring in Spencer and make it 3-0 Smokies. Brett Jackson followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Tony Thomas to give the Smokies a 4-0 lead.
With the rain bearing down as the game wore on, Archer would relinquish Montgomery's first run of the game to make it 4-1. The run wasn't charged to Archer though, due to an error to start the sixth. Archer would give way to reliever Luke Sommer with one out in the frame.
Sommer (S, 5) would induce two groundouts following a hit-by-pitch to get the Smokies out of the sixth, allowing one unearned in the process to maintain Tennessee's lead at 4-2 and get the save.
With two out in the bottom of the sixth and Marwin Gonzalez on first, the game was temporarily suspended and tarp put on the field. It would eventually be called with the Smokies leading, 4-2.
The Smokies will look to even the series with Montgomery in Tuesday's finale at Smokies Park. Tennessee's will square off against Montgomery's David Newmann (3-6, 3.91). Tickets for the game are available at www.smokiesbaseball.com or by calling (865) 286-2300.
