Birmingham Barons News Release
HOOVER, Ala. - With 33 wins, the Birmingham Barons now have the most wins of any team in Minor League Baseball.
The Barons picked up their 33rd win last night in typical fashion, scoring more than five runs while getting a quality start from their starting pitcher. With their 7-4 win, the Barons moved to 21-0 when scoring six-or- more runs in 2009. And after starting pitcher Kyle McCulloch gave up three runs in seven innings, the staff has now tossed 25 quality starts in 49 games.
The Barons currently lead the Southern League in several offensive categories. Their .270 batting average paces the circuit, and their .439 slugging percentage is 52 points higher than second place Carolina's slugging percentage. They also lead the league in hits with 441, home runs with 51, runs scored with 262 and doubles with 105.
The Barons are currently tied for the second best record in all Minor League Baseball at 33-15. The Barons trail Brevard County (Milwaukee, High A) by a half game in the standings and are mathematically tied for second place with Akron (Cleveland, Double A). The Barons have a 4.5 game lead over Mobile for the best record in the Southern League.
The Barons will look for their first 20-win month since August 2005 when they take on the Mississippi Braves tonight at 7:05 PM. The team is currently 19-9 in May. Aaron Poreda (4-4, 2.58), who is leading the Southern League with 55 strikeouts, will take the hill tonight against Deunte Heath (2-3, 3.35).
The Southern League wins leader, Lucas Harrell (6-1, 3.56) will toe the rubber when the Barons travel to Huntsville tomorrow for the start of a five-game set featuring the two division leaders of the Southern League.
