SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies' bats were in full force Saturday night, knocking in seven runs on 13 hits. In a series though where positives have eluded the home team, the Huntsville Stars scored early and often in handing the Smokies their seventh straight loss, 10-7. The loss, in front of 3,840 at Smokies Park, puts the Smokies (21-29) eight back of Huntsville (28-20) in the Southern League North Division standings.
Both teams got out to very fast starts in the series finale. Huntsville jumped on Tennessee starter Casey Lambert for four runs in the top of the first. The Smokies would answer back in the bottom of the frame on a two-out double by Marquez Smith. Smith's timely hit brought in teammates Brandon Guyer and Jim Adduci to cut the Stars' lead to 4-2.
The Smokies would take the lead in the second. Welington Castillo led the frame with a single off Huntsville starter David Welch. Castillo would move to third on a Darwin Barney double and score on a Lambert sacrifice fly to right, bringing the Smokies to within one. Guyer would follow with a double to right that would bring home Darwin Barney and tie the game at four. Guyer would come around to score on a Ty Wright single to give the Smokies a 5-4 lead.
As part of his 3-for-4 night, Castillo would knock in the first of his two runs on the night with a solo home run to left-center in the third, extending the Smokies lead to 6-4.
Smokies reliever Todd Blackford relieved Lambert in the fifth. Blackford (1-1) would give up two runs in the inning (both charged to Lambert) and two more in the sixth, giving way to teammate Jayson Ruhlman with one out in the sixth and with Huntsville now leading, 8-6. Ruhlman kept the Stars at bay throught the seventh, tossing 1.2 innings in relief. Blackford though would end up with the loss.
Castillo's second RBI of the game in the bottom of the seventh brought the Smokies back to within one at 8-7. Huntsville would tag Smokies reliever Alex Maestri though for two more in the eighth to pad their lead and complete the night's scoring.
Lambert did not factor in the decision Saturday, going only four innings and allowing six runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out one. Nick Bucci (1-0) picked up his first win of the year for Huntsville, with Omar Aguilar (S, 5) getting the save.
