Birmingham Barons News Release
The Birmingham Barons newly acquired catcher, Jason Bour committed two throwing errors in the 5th inning that led to four runs as the Barons dropped their fourth-straight Wednesday at Regions Park, 5-1 to Mississippi.
Jacob Rasner allowed just two hits prior to the fatal 5th inning, but things unraveled quickly from there. Cody Johnson led off with the first of three-consecutive singles, including Luis Bolivar's bunt single that resulted in the Braves' first run after Bour tossed the ball into right field. Rasner then hit Antoan Richardson to load the bases. Willie Cabrera then hit a fielder's choice to third base, allowing the Barons to get the runner at the plate but another errant toss by Bour toward first base allowed two more runs to cross the plate and Cabrera to move to third base. Eric Duncan ended Rasner's day with a single to left field that scored Cabrera.
Rasner (1-5, 4.00) lasted 4.1 innings on the afternoon and allowed four runs on six hits. All of the runs in the fourth inning were earned despite the errors. He walked three batters and struck out one.
The Barons offense looked good early, helping them to stake a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but disappeared quickly. Facing Southern League All-Star, Brandon Beachy, the Barons capitalized on consecutive one-out walks in the first inning when Christian Marrero lined a double down the first base line that plated CJ Retherford and gave the Barons runners at second and third base with one out. They didn't cash in further on the early opportunity as Tyler Kuhn lined out to second base and Dale Mollenhauer struck out to end the inning.
Beachy (2-1, 1.29) gave up just two more base runners during his final 5.0 innings of work, a two-out double by Jim Gallagher in the third inning and a one-out error in the fourth inning that allowed Mollenhauer to reach. He struck out six batters.
The Braves added an insurance run in the ninth inning off Anthony Carter. Jesus Sucre lined a one-out double down the third-base line. The catcher moved to third one out later on a wild pitch and came around to score on a two-out single by Richardson.
The Barons and the Suns will continue their six-game series Thursday night with two games. The teams will make up Tuesday's rain out at 5 PM. Brandon Hynick (3-0, 2.23) will take the ball in game one for the home team opposite Tim Gustafson (No Record). Game two will feature Ricky Brooks (0-3, 4.71) making his first start of the season against Richard Sullivan (1-7, 6.13). Both games will last seven innings.
The gates for the contest will open at 4:30 PM with the Thirsty Thursday $1 beer promotion beginning at 5:30. The promotion will run until the end of the 5^th inning of game two or 9 PM, whichever comes first.
