
Mudcats Blank Suns on Wednesday

Zebulon, N.C. - Tom Cochran and Federico Baez combined for a two-hit shutout leading the Carolina Mudcats (34-44, 4-5) to a 6-0 victory over the Jacksonville Suns (45-34, 5-4) in front of 1,308 Wednesday at Five County Stadium.
Cochran(5-3) scattered two singles with two walks, one hit batsman and four strikeouts in the winning decision. Suns starter Jeff Allison (4-4) fell in the losing decision, giving up three runs and eight hits over six and two-thirds innings. Federico Baez (1) saved the game after pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
Carolina opened the scoring in the second inning with a Jose Castro sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. Mike Costanzo led off the fourth inning with his sixth homerun of the season for a 2-0 score. The Mudcats last run against Allison came in the seventh inning on a Denis Phipps two-out double for a 3-0 lead.
The Mudcats added three runs against Suns reliever Jhan Marinez in the eighth inning. Eric Eymann walked and later scored on a wild pitch to open a 4-0 Carolina lead. Costanzo next singled and scored on a Devin Mesoraco two-run homerun for a 6-0 score.
