Birmingham Barons News Release
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Birmingham Barons (29-45) used a 15-hit performance to power past the Chattanooga Lookouts (39-35) by a 7-5 final Monday night at AT&T Field.
Eight players in the lineup recorded at least one hit, while four tallied multi-hit efforts. White Sox No. 8 prospect Blake Rutherford paced the Barons with four base knocks, including a two-run single in the ninth which ultimately represented the game-winning hit.
Rutherford continue his torrid pace at the plate and raised his batting average to .385 across 21 games during the month of June.
Luis Gonzalez put the Barons on the board in the first inning when sent a sacrifice fly to right to plate Luis Robert, who doubled to lead off the game. Gonzalez added an RBI-single in the third to extend Birmingham's lead to 2-0.
After Chattanooga responded with a three-run fourth, the Barons regained the lead in the fifth with the help of an error and a run-scoring groundout.
Lookouts designated hitter Ibandel Isabel homered for the seventh time this season against the Barons to tie the game once more in the bottom half of the frame.
An RBI-double off the bat of Alfredo Gonzalez pushed Birmingham ahead in the eighth. Rutherford's fourth hit of the night, which came with two outs in the ninth, made it a 7-4 ballgame.
Barons reliever Danny Dopico locked down his second save of the season despite a late rally from the Lookouts. The right-hander allowed one run and stranded the bases loaded to close out the victory.
Left-hander Hunter Schryver (W, 1-1) collected his first win in relief after he logged a pair of scoreless frames out of the bullpen. He faced the minimum and struck out two.
Barons starter John Parke settled for a no-decision in his Double-A debut. The southpaw surrendered four runs (all earned) on six hits across six innings of work.
The Barons will return to Regions Field to begin their second-half home slate with a five-game series against the Mobile BayBears. First pitch in the opener is set for 7:05 p.m. CT on Tuesday as Birmingham sends right-hander Blake Battenfield (2-2, 4.84) to the mound against Mobile right-hander Andrew Wantz (0-1, 4.82).
Coverage of Tuesday's game will begin at 6:50 p.m. with the Coca-Cola Pregame Show on WJQX-FM 100.5.
