Barons Announce Returning Players for the Eighth Annual Rickwood Classic

June 6, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – It was a time when Madonna and Michael Jackson ruled the airwaves, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev were locked in the Cold War, and Mary Lou Retton and Carl Lewis fought for the Gold. That's right, the 1980's were an interesting decade for all American's and the Barons as well. On Wednesday, June 11th at 12:30 PM the Barons will revisit this era as they take on the Huntsville Stars at historic Rickwood Field for the 8th Annual Rickwood Classic.

The Barons and Stars will take a look back at the 1980's and pay tribute to the people and events of the decade. The 80's were an important time for both teams. For the Barons, the decade saw the team return to Rickwood from Montgomery in 1981 and win two Southern League Championships in 1983 and 1987. For the game, the Barons will be donning the uniforms of the 1983 Championship team, who posted an all-time Southern League best home record of 57-16, and an auction for the jerseys will be held throughout the game with a portion of the proceeds going to the restoration of Rickwood Field.

As part of the festivities, the Barons have invited back several players from the era. The group of returning players and coaches includes single-season home run leader Rondal Rollin, manager Roy Majtyka, infielder Scottie Earl and pitchers Chuck Cary and Mark Smith. There will also be a special presentation for former Barons owner Art Clarkson who will be honored for his dedication to baseball and the Birmingham Barons.

Fans are encouraged to come to the game and "dress the part", as music and entertainment from the period will be provided. Tickets for the eighth annual Rickwood Classic are on sale now at the Hoover Met box office. Tickets are $8.00 general admission and $6.00 for groups of 20 or more. For ticket information contact the Barons Front Office at (205) 988-3200.
