Stars Win 6-1 Sprint over Lookouts

June 6, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Huntsville Stars News Release

Huntsville, AL – First, it appeared they might be washed out. Then it seemed rain would cause a lengthy delay. Instead, the Stars and Lookouts blazed through a baseball sprint of just over two hours, and Huntsville used three long balls to secure a 6-1 victory over the Lookouts on Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The first-place Stars (44-34) won their second straight over Chattanooga (27-33) and moved four games in front of Birmingham in the Southern League West Division.

All of the Stars' runs came on two-out, two-run homers. In the first, Corey Hart crushed a two-run blast to left, his seventh of the year, for a 2-0 Huntsville lead. Up 2-1 in the fifth, Mike Jones led off with a double, the first extra-base hit by a Stars pitcher this season. Two outs later, J.J. Hardy ripped his eighth homerun, a two-run laser that cleared the lowest part of the outfield wall, right next to the foul pole in the leftfield corner. After Hart followed with a single up the middle, Brandon Gemoll drove an opposite field homer to left, his eighth, putting Huntsville up, 6-1.

Jones (6-1) was outstanding, winning his fifth straight decision and sixth of the year to tie for fourth in the league in victories. The 20-year-old right-hander fanned six over seven solid frames, allowing just one run on five hits and one walk. Stars closer Mike Adams tossed two perfect innings of relief, striking out two. Dustin Moseley (4-4) suffered his fourth loss and third against Huntsville, surrendering six runs on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in six innings.

Huntsville matches righty Jeff Robinson (0-0, 0.00), making his first appearance for the Stars, against Lookouts right-hander Bobby Basham (4-4, 3.47) in Saturday's game three of the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Joe Davis Stadium. The first 1500 fans through the gate receive a Jason Giambi bobblehead doll courtesy of WRSA Lite 96.9 FM.
