Barons Announce New Hitting Coach, Roster Moves
June 6, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release
The Birmingham Barons have announced that Mark Haley is the new Barons hitting coach filling the spot left vacant when Gregg Ritchie was promoted to Triple-A Charlotte last month. Haley joins the Barons from the Advanced Rookie Great Falls team in his 12th season in the White Sox organization. Prior to this season, Haley had been the hitting coach for Single-A Winston-Salem from 1999-2002 and the manager for Single-A Hickory of the South Atlantic League in 1998. In addition, the Barons have announced several roster moves. LHP Neal Cotts has been placed on the seven-day disabled list with left should soreness, RHP Rob Purvis has been activated from the disabled list and joins the team in Jackson, and RHP Brandon O'Neal has joined the team from Winston-Salem. The Barons roster currently stands at 23 active players. Of the five pitchers in the Barons opening-day rotation (Neal Cotts, Dennis Ulacia, Jim Bullard, Corwin Malone and Brian West), Brian West is the only one currently in the rotation. Cotts now joins LHP Dennis Ulacia, and LHP Corwin Malone on the Barons DL with LHP Jim Bullard moved to the bullpen just a few weeks into the season. Purvis missed the majority of last season due to injury but in 2001, his last full season, he went 5-9 with a 5.27 ERA 24 games (23 starts) for Winston-Salem. O'Neal was selected by the White Sox in the 2002 Rule V draft from the Angels and last year went 5-14 with a 5.24 ERA in 24 games (22 starts) for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga. His 14 losses led the league.
