Knoxville Smokies News Release

Sevierville, Tenn. - After a 64 minute rain delay, Josh Willingham blasted two home runs off Smokies Starter Josh Pearce (2-1) and knocked in four runs as Carolina (35-23) defeated Tennessee (33-27) 6-4 for the second straight night.

Ryan Snare (5-1) threw six innings, allowing the only two Tennessee hits to pick up the win. Snare allowed four runs but only two were earned. Carolina's bullpen dominated the remainder of the game. Marty McCleary and Mike Flannery combined to pitch the final three innings for the Mudcats with Flannery finishing the game to pick up his 7th save of the year.

The Smokies began their only rally in the 4th inning. Skip Schumaker led off the inning with a single, and scored two batters later on a Papo Bolivar groundout. An error, a walk, and a hit batter later, Corey Erickson came to the plate and ripped a two-run single into centerfield. The Smokies could only manage a season low two hits in the game and both came in the 4th inning off the Mudcat starter.

St. Louis catcher Joe Girardi, with the Smokies on major league rehab, did not play but is expected to start behind the plate Saturday night.

The Smokies will try for their first win against Carolina at Smokies Park this season tomorrow night at 7:15. Rhett Parrott (2-6) will take the mound for Tennessee against Carolina's Aaron Small (2-2).
