Barnstormers Play Host to Superstars
August 4, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
They were two of the great athletes of the previous generation. They have also been two of the most colorful and, at times, controversial celebrities both in their sports heyday and in their retirement.
Baseball slugger Jose Canseco, one of the Oakland A's legendary Bash Brothers, will appear at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Friday, August 19. The following night, the enigmatic, flamboyant and extremely talented NBA star Dennis Rodman will appear at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Both events will be a part of Lancaster's home series against the York Revolution.
Fans will have a special, limited opportunity to meet these All-Star, championship winning athletes. The first 50 to purchase the Jose Canseco Meet-and-Greet Package for $60 will get to meet the famous slugger, get two autographs and have a photo taken with Canseco.
A similar package exists with Rodman for the first 25 people to buy.
Both will throw out ceremonial first pitches and will be available for a very limited time to sign autographs on the concourse.
Canseco, now 52, will also participate in a softball home run hitting contest, pitting his skills against those of five pre-selected fans. Can the locals compete with a two-time American League home run champion?
The native of Cuba, who grew up in Miami, reached the Major Leagues with Oakland in 1985 and eventually played for seven teams, all in the American League, over 17 seasons. His greatest fame came with Oakland, winning American League Rookie of the Year honors in 1986 and the Most Valuable Player Award in 1988. The slugger appeared in five All-Star Games, representing the A's and later one more as a member of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1999.
He amassed 462 career home runs, leading the American League in both 1988 and 1991. His third season with more than 40 long balls came in 1998, when Canseco launched 46 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Often forgotten is that Canseco also had speed. In his 1988 MVP season, not only did he crank 42 home runs to lead the AL, he also swiped 40 bases, becoming the first person to reach 40 homers and steals in the same year. It has been accomplished on three other occasions.
After baseball, Canseco, whose identical twin, Ozzie, is the Atlantic League record holder for home runs in a single season, has been a major player in reality television, including a stint on Celebrity Apprentice.
Rodman, now 55, put together an incredible 14-year stretch in the NBA during which he made two All-Star appearances, won four rebounding titles and, most notably, played on five NBA championship teams.
The New Jersey native began his career in Detroit, where he spent seven seasons and won two NBA titles. He moved on to San Antonio for two seasons. While he was known as a top tier basketball player, it was his next career move that made him a sports icon.
For the 1995-96 season, Rodman joined the Chicago Bulls. Teamed with Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen current Warriors head coach Steve Kerr and Ron Harper, the Bulls won the NBA title all three seasons Rodman was there.
As great as Rodman was he may be more remembered for dying his hair an assortment of colors, a variety of piercings and a wild wardrobe.
Since basketball, Rodman has embarked upon a pro wrestling career, has taken on some TV roles, and, like Canseco, been a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice.
Fans wishing to buy the special Meet-and-Greet package for either night may do so by going to the Two Dudes Box Office at Clipper Magazine Stadium or by going online to www.lancasterbarnstormers.com.
