Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
Bridgeport, CT- The Bridgeport Bluefish (15-12, 45-52) were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters (17-11, 52-46) 5-3 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday night in the finale of a three game midweek series in the Park City. After losing the opening game, the Skeeters responded by winning yesterday afternoon and follow that up by taking the rubber game to conclude a ten game road trip with an overall record of 7-3.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Ross Seaton (0-1) was tagged with the loss in his Bluefish debut, giving up four runs (three earned runs) on six hits in four innings on the mound, walking three, striking out one, and tossing a wild pitch. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Jake Hale (4-2) earned the win, allowing just one run on four hits in six and two-thirds innings pitched, striking out three and issuing two free passes. Derrick Loop picked up his 23rd save of the 2016 campaign for the Skeeters with a scoreless ninth inning of relief out of the bullpen.
Sugar Land struck immediately against Seaton, batting around in the top half of the first inning to pull out to a 4-0 lead. A run-scoring groundout by Delwyn Young allowed Rene Tosoni to cross the plate with the game's first sun after he led off the ballgame with a double. Ricky Hague followed with a single that drove home Jeff Dominguez for the second run of the frame. Jeremy Barfield extended Sugar Land's lead 3-0 just two batters later, singling to bring in Hague. Johan Limonta launched a sacrifice fly to right field plating Travis Scott to cap off the scoring for the visitors. The Bluefish would crack the scoreboard for the first time in the home half of the third, as Welington Dotel singled home Luis Hernandez to score, cutting the deficit to 4-1
The Skeeters added an insurance run in the top of the fifth, as Barfield collected his second RBI single of the game by sending Scott home, putting Sugar Land up 5-1. The 'Fish were able to mount a comeback in the bottom of the eighth, putting two runs on the board to cut the Skeeters lead in half at 5-3. Anthony Giansanti singled to plate Endy Chavez and Welington Dotel would come in moments later, as a throwing error by Barfield gave Dotel the time to hustle down the line from third base. Bridgeport's efforts fell just short in the ninth inning, as Loop secured the win for Sugar Land, inducing Luis Hernandez, who was representing the winning run, to ground out to the shortstop Hague as the Skeeters were able to hang on for the two-run victory. Dotel led the offensive efforts for the Bluefish with a pair of base-knocks.
